<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally I can share this! From October to January, I worked on a piece that I had been planning to work on for years ever since I first heard of Theocracy back in 2011. They have been my favorite band ever since and have greatly influenced not only my art, but more importantly, my faith.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have worked on a few digital-stained-glass tributes and artworks over the last seven years, but it was only recently that I felt I had the necessary skills to create the poster (as well as Theocracy had just come out with their newest album: Ghost Ship). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was by far the most difficult piece of the digital-stained-glass artworks I have worked on, but also the most satisfying. It went through many revisions before I decided upon the final design. From there it took months of work as I could only work on it late at night after coming home from my 9-5 job. Some revisions were due to wanting a more solid and geometric design, but others came when news dropped that Ernie Topran had been officially added to the band which caused me to have to rework parts of my initial designs, but well worth it in the end and exciting that I got to add him to the final poster.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the poster are all of Theocracy's songs from their albums (not including their incredible and often hilarious, epic Christmas music). Some are depicted by lyrics on flying pages from the main book, and others by symbols and mini-illustrations. At the bottom of this post is a "map" of sorts to explain what each represents (some songs duplicated for design-sake).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Theocracy is an incredible Christian-metal band that rises above the rest. They have greatly impacted my faith and helped me through tough times with their incredible lyrics. Every song is powerful and epic conveying deep powerful messages for the broken-hearted, marginalized, lost, weary, and hopeful. They are worth taking the time to check out:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Below is a look at the progress for how I created the final poster.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i2ZGBpBIQik/WNm98D7U0uI/AAAAAAAACMc/vgHJ8Ul2P0UvSqZ3uZ6nmWwZffzBYNMNwCLcB/s1600/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i2ZGBpBIQik/WNm98D7U0uI/AAAAAAAACMc/vgHJ8Ul2P0UvSqZ3uZ6nmWwZffzBYNMNwCLcB/s400/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These were the initial "sketches" I did for the poster early on trying to work out what I wanted to achieve. Eventually I abandoned this concept, but kept some of the features like the glowing cross beam.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-82qCo9MwVXg/WNm-bNM_ncI/AAAAAAAACMw/sjODeBdHick8pFZOLtupKNo5fBtslbOugCLcB/s1600/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-82qCo9MwVXg/WNm-bNM_ncI/AAAAAAAACMw/sjODeBdHick8pFZOLtupKNo5fBtslbOugCLcB/s400/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I then started drawing each member through Photoshop in greyscale as that is easier than working in color for me. Often I skip important steps without working out the values first, so this method helped a lot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There were few, quality photos of each member in the angles I wanted so I had to use parts of my body for reference for often blurry hands. I watched the Ghost Ship music video countless times (probably in the 100s of views) pausing often to get close up shots of the drum set, Jared Oldham, and Matt Smith. In the case of Matt, his final pose is composed of about 4 or 5 different takes from the video. I gave Val Allen Wood his long hair back as the first reference I was using he had short hair, but recent photos showed he had the long epic metal hair which I drew over my previous drawing. Jonathan Hinds was the only one I had fairly significant reference for without having to alter much on his pose. I would often work with the reference on the left screen comparing proportions while having the right screen show reference of some of my favorite artists like Alphonse Mucha.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nwwsO4gZg-k/WNm98R6iWyI/AAAAAAAACMg/Vxh9LaOTfpcMDary2nMNZdunYPXeEU5GwCLcB/s1600/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nwwsO4gZg-k/WNm98R6iWyI/AAAAAAAACMg/Vxh9LaOTfpcMDary2nMNZdunYPXeEU5GwCLcB/s400/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I was working on drawing the band, I saw that Ernie Topran was added and had to quickly add him to the artwork. Here is the final line-up of the band before I moved them to the stained-glass frame.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nrrRAawN7Oc/WNm9_qAcHZI/AAAAAAAACMs/ef98zweY7FQycsWTGFMqi3nJb86KpBkzgCLcB/s1600/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nrrRAawN7Oc/WNm9_qAcHZI/AAAAAAAACMs/ef98zweY7FQycsWTGFMqi3nJb86KpBkzgCLcB/s400/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next, after drawing the band, I penciled out some rough concepts for frames, but had to change from a 4 panel window to eventually the 3 panel window when Ernie was officially added to the group. I went through several designs (many not shown here) until I uncovered the secrets of how most stained-glass frames were designed. On previous artworks I was pretty much just guessing, but now I know how to compose the overall design and frame in a much better and smarter way.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PWSlQvK4BbQ/WNm9-jE5F-I/AAAAAAAACMk/RRTFmTGqlPU2hLcnc-wfFcvg8P0DNOdPwCLcB/s1600/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PWSlQvK4BbQ/WNm9-jE5F-I/AAAAAAAACMk/RRTFmTGqlPU2hLcnc-wfFcvg8P0DNOdPwCLcB/s400/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
After figuring out the frame I created a color rough and sketched out what I wanted to have illustrated and where. Some parts were first created in Adobe Illustrator and brought to Photoshop to paint, while other parts were painted directly in Photoshop. The Paper Tiger was probably the most challenging to draw while the Master Storyteller and flying pages was the most satisfying part of this project beyond drawing the band.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KVCgOJP-BCs/WNm9_CKbPeI/AAAAAAAACMo/VfWCsFEr_PYmAK4yZEE_35Qk6BYc_GgnwCLcB/s1600/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KVCgOJP-BCs/WNm9_CKbPeI/AAAAAAAACMo/VfWCsFEr_PYmAK4yZEE_35Qk6BYc_GgnwCLcB/s400/Theocracy-Progression-Howard-5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Out of all of the elements I had to draw, the Ghost Ship took the longest.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The greatest part about this project was hearing back from Matt Smith of Theocracy and his excitement about the poster. Nothing is more rewarding than that and is why I do what I do.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please check them out and if you can, support them by rocking out to one of their live shows, purchasing an album or merchandise, and praying for them as they help spread the good news of the Gospel through the best metal music I have ever heard.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! Here is my latest digital-stained-glass artwork for the amazingly talented and wonderful Lovell sisters of <a href="http://www.larkinpoe.com/">Larkin Poe</a>. Larkin Poe is my second favorite band of all time and probably will always be one of my favorite musicians to listen to. I love metal music a lot, but Larkin Poe is what is often called swampadelic. I normally don't go for this type of music, but their music is incredible! ...undeniably incredible!! Whether it is shredding it on the dobro: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h10maovzcY0">you must see this video!</a>, or the heart melting vocals and lyrics that express head-over-heels in love or dealing with heart break, Larkin Poe is someone I can listen to over and over again and never, ever tire of listening to. Not many of the artists I listen to I can say that about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That is why I created an artwork for them as a way to say thanks. This digital-stained-glass artwork shows Megan on the dobro on the left and Rebecca playing mandolin on the right. All five EPs are highlighted through the background elements and fox. The bottom left green grass is the "Summer" EP, the red tree is the "Fall" EP, the snowy-leafless tree is for the "Winter" EP, the flowers in the grass bottom right are for the "Spring" EP, and the fox is for the "Thick as Thieves" EP from the lyrics of the song "Fox." "KIN" is highlighted to represent Larkin Poe's newest album: "Kin." The moon is from a lyric from my favorite song of theirs: "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13KI42IuEB0">Trance</a>." The red bird flying from the cage represents another favorite song of mine: "Free Like a Bird." The ravens surrounding the title represent their family connection to the one and only, Edgar Allen Poe! Please check out their music and follow these incredible musicians! Here is the link to their website: <a href="http://www.larkinpoe.com/">Larkin Poe</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Above is a progression of the artwork. I always start with a very crude sketch. I easily can translate what's in my head to the paper/computer and only when I am not working on a personal project will I bother to do a more detailed sketch. For this I mainly wanted to make sure the window shape and spacing would work. Next I sketched/painted Megan and Rebecca from photo reference in separate files and brought them into the final photoshop file. I began to refine the sketch and eventually created a color rough before I began adding final colors and textures. The entire process took over 400 hours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My camera can't do it justice, but this is the gift I gave to the Lovell sisters just before I shipped it to them just in time for Christmas! Merry Christmas, Larkin Poe! I gave them a custom made lightbox with the help of <a href="http://www.blueriverdigital.com/">Blue River Digital</a> to illuminate my work as if it were an actual stained-glass window. It is layered so it has an appearance of depth and the color is more brilliant and rich than you can see here or even in the first image posted at the top of this post. I hope that they enjoy this gift. From one artist to another, thank you to Larkin Poe. Keep making such wonderful and amazing music!</div>

I am still working on the art for the <a href="http://www.stevenwhowardart.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Pilgrim%27s%20Progress">Pilgrim project</a>, but come 2014 I will be working back on my War of the Worlds project. I might post here as well, but I have created <a href="http://waroftheworlds-redmachine.blogspot.com/">a new art blog</a> specifically for the project. Until then, I will keep you posted on the progress for The Pilgrim art book.</div>

Here is the second panel I have worked on for a book based on <a href="http://www.natecurrin.com/">Nate Currin</a>'s album, The Pilgrim, based on The Pilgrim Progress by John Bunyun. This panel is for the song, "Apollyon, That Old Serpent The Devil." It is officially the largest file I have ever created for a single piece of art at 9.2gb!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are plenty of more for me to work on and possibly show. Until then, check out Nate's <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-pilgrim/id640593702">album</a> as it is now available!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This month I had the opportunity of a lifetime to celebrate my 26th birthday</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
doing something I had really wanted to do: fly in some vintage planes from WWII.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On my birthday, the 24th of July, I got to fly in "Gunfighter," a P-51D Mustang! It was the best plane I have ever flown in. I also had a unique opportunity to present, Larry (the pilot), with my cutaway drawing of a Mustang. Now my art is hanging in their museum! It is one thing to research and draw a piece of important history, it is another thing to actually fly in it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GFhoBOHbSmc/Uf6havCYFJI/AAAAAAAABFo/ORxn5P3e8bY/s1600/DSCN0339.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GFhoBOHbSmc/Uf6havCYFJI/AAAAAAAABFo/ORxn5P3e8bY/s400/DSCN0339.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Later in the week I got to fly in a B-25 Mitchell Bomber. This thing is LOUD! I was able to sit up in the nose for the majority of the flight and it was awesome! I feel privileged to have been given two good views in two amazing planes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The rest of the vacation was pretty cool as well as I got my first flight lesson where I learned how to take off, recover from a stall, and land a plane. I also got to launch some model rockets. All in all, it was a pretty spectacular vacation. Now back to working on some art... </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally finished up the first panel for <a href="http://www.natecurrin.com/">Nate Currin</a>'s upcoming album project based on The Pilgrim's Progress. This is one panel of 18 that I'll be doing. This is the first file that I've ever had to use a .psb instead of a .psd. I wanted to ensure a high resolution finish so the file in photoshop is quite large! Anyway, I'll update this site with previews of the progress for the 'Progress' every now and then until the final book release. Enjoy! -Also, check out Nate's music. It is going to be one awesome album!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Temporarily, my <a href="http://www.stevenwhowardart.blogspot.com/search/label/war%20of%20the%20worlds">War of the Worlds</a> cross-section/cutaway project is on hold for a few months as I begin work on a project that has me <i>extremely</i> excited to be working on. I will be returning to my digital stained-glass style/approach similar to that of the <a href="http://www.stevenwhowardart.blogspot.com/search/label/Christ%20Church%20Mural">mural</a> I did for Christ Church- but with a more matured use of the stained-glass look.<br />
I am helping create art for a book that will accompany the upcoming album based on The Pilgrim's Progress (originally by John Bunyan- it is an allegorical tale of one man's journey of faith, trials and the venture to the 'Celetial City'), composed and sung by the very talented musician, <a href="http://www.natecurrin.com/">Nate Currin</a>. Check out his music, it is amazing stuff! I've had the opportunity to preview the upcoming album to produce the illustrations, and it is one of the <u>best</u> albums I have heard for this year. Above is a sketch for the first song. Later, I'll give a preview of the stained glass and cleaned-up linework. I'll announce when the album and the art-book are released. Stay tuned, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is some progress on the outer-layer line-work. For the most part I have been doing all the line-weights at 0.15 in Illustrator. The basket was perhaps the most complicated piece on the tripod to draw so I went ahead and finished the final line-weights on this particular section as I had built up momentum on it. Line-weights are as follows: The outermost line (for the entire tripod) 0.75, secondary inner bold lines 0.5, inner bold lines 0.35, main line work 0.15, and plane changes/details 0.05. It is taking quite some time to complete this stage of my project, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right. Since I plan on publishing this and future works I want to ensure each artwork is of the best quality and close to or on par with the level of some of the masters of cutaway/cross-section art. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stay tuned for future updates.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been unexpectedly delayed in my project for my War of the Worlds Tripod cutaway. The past month I have been dealing with a minor disk protrusion in my lower back. In order to let it heal, after sitting at work all day, when I have been getting home most of the time I have been laying down rather than exasperating the issue by sitting longer and working on my cutaway. Back pain on any level is rough, but I am blessed that it is healing so quickly. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm doing much better now and have started back up the linework first level for the cutaway. I will post it here once complete. I am also recording my process/progress and when I figure out how to put the videos together and speed it up I will put it up here as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Above is a quick sketch I did tonight of the direction I want to head in the design of the martians. Some alterations from H.G.Well's version I feel are necessary as the description translated into art tends to produce a cute look rather than a sinister alien look. Anyway, enjoy!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've finished the 3D sketch of my War of the Worlds Tripod! I'll provide other views of the project as I produce the orthographic views. I'm SOOOO exited that I can now move on to the drawing stage!!! This was my first true 3D model I've ever made. I used Google Sketch-up due to the fact that I never received the proper training in 3D and needed a simple program to produce a movable model to rotate to any angle that I would need for this project. Now I will produce orthographic views while starting the sketch for the exterior/interior view for the final cutaway which should be in 3-point perspective. My next few stages will be in Photoshop and Illustrator.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was really excited how this turned out. The 'feet' were never drawn in my original sketch (follow label below to view previous related posts) and after modeling the feet with three 'toes' it didn't look right, so I deleted the rear 'toe' for each foot giving an odd look with only two for each... which gives it a more alien look I think. Either way, it was never determined in my original sketch so I felt I had some leeway. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On another side note, the figures at the bottom are representational of scale to the Martians (the larger figure) and to humans (the smaller figure). I will be starting my sketches of the Martian soon trying to figure out their look and how closely I should resemble them to H.G. Wells' original description.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will keep you posted as future work comes through. Hopefully within the next month I should have one or two drawings depending on the time I'm allotted. As usual, enjoy! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is another update on the War of the Worlds Tripod. I am getting closer to being done with my 3D "sketch." I have the "whips," "tentacles" on the lower legs between the 'vertebre,' and the feet/toes. Once I finish this stage, I will rotate the model to various general viewing angles to produce some orthos, and then use an angle fairly similar to the one shown above for a basis to produce a cutaway illustration in 3-point perspective. There are hundreds of steps left before this part of my larger project is complete, but the Tripod should be finished hopefully sometime around summer next year or so, depending on other time-consuming factors of life. The actual cutaway will involve having to draw the exterior and interiors and painting both. Also, there needs to be research into pneumatics, hydraulics, steam engines, turbines, reactors, and vascular and muscular systems in humans and animals (mostly snakes, elephants, and squids) for producing a 'believable' construct for the inner workings of the tripod. Anyway, as I continue to work on the 3D and other future stages of the project I will try to keep you up to date as best I can on the progress of it all. Enjoy! </div>

Here is more progress on the 3D base for my future cut-away of H.G. Well's War of the Worlds' Tripod "Fighting Machine." I've finally figured out a decent enough 'basket' design for the back to store helpless human victims prey to vicious, ruthless martians. In the book they are described as a 'fisherman's basket' which has a woven look, but not as excitingly designed as I wanted it to be. Through most of this model I am taking a lot of 'artistic license' in keeping to the original descriptions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All I have left now are the whips protruding from behind the 'eye' and the upper legs, and lower tentacle legs plus the 'feet' or 'toes.' I'll keep you updated on the progress when I can. Enjoy!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The process on the tripod has been going pretty slow lately as I have been very busy moving into a new apartment, projects at my job, and other various things. Nevertheless, here is an update for the tripod. I am still in the Google Sketch-up phase, learning the program and such. Once I get this all finished I can get on to the more exciting part for me, drawing all the different angles and planning the cutaways. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wasn't happy with how the first version of the 3D arm turned out so I re-did it to match closer to the original sketch. As always, I will continue to keep you updated on my progress for the War of the Worlds Tripod cutaway.</div>Steven Wayne Howardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06560465433821328363noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9006462217926832102.post-36343446203347355572012-03-17T00:49:00.001-07:002012-03-17T00:49:41.613-07:00War of the Worlds Tripod (part 3)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is some more progress on the War of the Worlds tripod work in Google SketchUp. This, again, is only so I have something to rotate around into the angle I need it rather than having to figure out what might be going on when I draw it in a different perspective. Here is a link to the original sketch: <a href="http://www.stevenwhowardart.blogspot.com/2012/02/war-of-worlds-redux-part-1.html">tripod</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It has been interesting trying to teach myself 3D, but a rewarding factor is seeing how menacing the thing can look when rotated to another angle. You can't always anticipate that when drawing one angle 2Dimensionally.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PAX4GGnGDSQ/T2RBLGRCTTI/AAAAAAAAA-4/rYBBaJpRnJ4/s1600/Howard_MartianFramework_Sketch1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="301" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PAX4GGnGDSQ/T2RBLGRCTTI/AAAAAAAAA-4/rYBBaJpRnJ4/s320/Howard_MartianFramework_Sketch1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a sketch I quickly did during break at work. I've been trying to think of how some of the framework might look within the tripod. I want it to look alien and organic, yet still have a mechanical and structural look. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, stay tuned for more when I become able to work on the project and post stuff here!</div>Steven Wayne Howardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06560465433821328363noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9006462217926832102.post-47078009858116344432012-02-25T23:10:00.000-08:002012-02-25T23:13:53.679-08:00War of the Worlds Tripod (part 2)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is some in-progress for the design-faze before I cutaway the tripod / fighting-machine for War of the Worlds. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is what I'm affectionately calling the Martian "T-rex Arm." What is the arm for? Not sure, but it will have something to do with the extermination of humankind... There are three on the main body of the tripod just above the three main legs (see previous post for the tripod sketch). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am sketching in Google SketchUp as it will be easier to cutaway rotating the 3D image to different angles (like from the front and the back, etc.). I have barely touched 3D- in fact today was probably my most exposure to using a 3D program. It's not going to look perfect, but as long as it is near the general shape I want then I'm happy as ultimately I will be drawing over the 3D image in Adobe Ai and Photoshop. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, as usual I will post the progress as it comes along when I'm not busy with work at my job.</div>Steven Wayne Howardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06560465433821328363noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9006462217926832102.post-40677061214573878182012-02-19T20:22:00.000-08:002012-02-19T20:22:59.129-08:00War of the Worlds Redux (part 1)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3KRCCDX0nX4/T0HGxgpInSI/AAAAAAAAA-Q/_fmRGhD48os/s1600/2012-02-19+19.52.49.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3KRCCDX0nX4/T0HGxgpInSI/AAAAAAAAA-Q/_fmRGhD48os/s320/2012-02-19+19.52.49.jpg" width="248" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a quick, rough sketch of a long project I have ahead of me. I am currently planning a complete cutaway, cross-section book based on H.G. Well's War of the Worlds. There are a about 3-5 versions of tripods (or fighting machines), 2 worker machines, 2 versions of the cylinder, an "assembler", a miniature alien pod, and several other machines for the martians that I plan to design and cutaway. Each will need to be fully designed- having all the proper orthographics before being cutaway. The tripods will be loosely based on my previous tripod designs I had cutaway long ago, but hopefully better designed and in proper perspective. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The project will take a very long time to complete mostly due to the fact that I have a full-time illustration job with a long commute. I will try and post what I have as I develop rough sketches and flesh out the ideas that make the martians and their machines work as they do.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This proposed book will be very thorough covering the smallest of tech to largest and potential reasons why the martians have developed the tech as they have. As for the finish of this project, expect it to be done 3-6 years from now at least. As to why I'm doing all this crazy work on the side from my job... because it's sci-fi, it's cutaway art, and most of all... it's fun!</div>Steven Wayne Howardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06560465433821328363noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9006462217926832102.post-90966085175990217752012-02-11T21:32:00.000-08:002012-02-11T21:32:42.871-08:00Job in the Space Industry!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Awesome news for all of you who didn't get to see my facebook post. I recently was hired as a full-time technical illustrator for Space Systems Loral down in Palo Alto, California. I will be mostly illustrating satellites. They are a great company and have been around for the past 50 years so they have great experience and deep connections with the space industry world wide. I'm still currently living in SF, but hope to move closer to work as soon as I'm able. On the side I will continue to create cutaways and cross-sections and have a book (based on a very popular science fiction novel) in the works that will probably be published in the next two or three years depending on the time I'll be able to devote to it. Either way, in the future you will be able to see updates and in-progress of the book. As far as seeing what I produce for SS/L you will just have to wait, <i>if</i> and when, those images are posted by the company on the site. </div>Steven Wayne Howardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06560465433821328363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9006462217926832102.post-78419199090569901932012-01-16T17:11:00.000-08:002019-05-23T13:10:34.909-07:00Workspace Update<div style="text-align: center;">
